Shockwave Therapy Treats Heel Pain

The high-intensity acoustic shock waves produced by this therapy are used to treat and manage a wide variety of foot and ankle problems, especially heel pain. These powerful soundwaves non-invasively permeate the tissues to provide relief of pain and discomfort for conditions including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and heel spurs. This is a very low risk process, but it is not recommended for patients with heart conditions, open wounds, or peripheral neuropathy. Pregnant women should also avoid this procedure.

How does it work?

A specially formulated conducting gel is applied to the heel area and a probe is then utilized to transfer the concentrated shockwaves to the injured area. The procedure induces a healing response by increasing swelling and thereby improving blood flow which speeds the healing process. The procedure can be performed with either high energy or lower energy sound waves. A local anesthetic is necessary for the high energy treatment, while the low energy sound waves can usually be applied without any anesthesia. Multiple sessions are usually necessary for the best healing response.

Minor complications after the procedure may include some pain that subsides shortly thereafter, and patients should avoid excessive weight bearing and any intense activity. This is an excellent option for patients who want to avoid the complications that may come with more invasive surgery.
